WebP and AVIF.
Modern image formats that produce the same visible quality as JPEG at roughly a third to a half of the file size.
Why it matters.
Photographs are the largest thing on most small business pages, and most of them are uploaded straight from a phone at full resolution. Converting to WebP and serving the size actually needed for the layout is the single cheapest speed improvement available on a typical site — often more than everything else combined.
How to check it yourself.
Check the file size of the largest image on your home page. Anything over about 300 KB is several times bigger than it needs to be, and on a phone connection that is paid for in seconds.
