CMS (content management system).

The admin panel a site is edited through — WordPress, Squarespace, Shopify and the rest. It is the part that lets a non-technical owner change text without opening code.

Why it matters.

A CMS is worth having when somebody actually logs in and changes things. When nobody does, it is a liability: an unmaintained admin panel is the main way small business sites get compromised, and it is why so many of the abandoned sites in our survey are on one. The honest question before choosing is not which CMS, but who is going to use it.

How to check it yourself.

Ask yourself when you last logged into the admin panel. If the honest answer is "never" or "two years ago", you are paying the maintenance cost of a CMS without using any of its benefit.
