Asking permission before setting cookies that are not strictly necessary — analytics, advertising, embedded video that tracks.
Why it matters.
Canadian law is based on meaningful consent rather than the specific banner format European rules produced, and a site using only its own analytics with no advertising has a much lighter obligation than one running ad pixels. What is not acceptable anywhere is a banner whose only button is "accept" while the tracking has already started.
How to check it yourself.
Load your site in a private window and check which cookies are set before you click anything. Anything analytics or advertising related that appears immediately is set without consent.
